SomeRegulars and visitors voice disappointment over the shop's decision to close during the weekend, particularly on Saturdays, which are prime visiting times for tourists in Buckfastleigh. This closure leads to criticism from those who believe that the business is missing valuable opportunities to cater to eager customers. Moreover, a few reviews highlight the limited dining options within the restaurant itself, as the focus remains heavily on takeaway service. Occasionally, visitors experience longer wait times during busy hours, when the small shop tries to meet high demand with limited staff.
A truly excellent Hake and chips for a very nice price of £8.60. Great value these days! I did mean to take a picture but forgot the moment I started shovelling it in my mouth. Tasty chips, perfectly cooked and not floury or dry. Fish, thick and flaky with a great flavour and not swimming in grease. I definitely recommend this place
Some amazing fresh tasting fish in great batter. I read the one dodgy review by someone that had never reviewed before or after and decided to ignore it. I’m glad I did as it was a great fish shop. I’d suggest getting there 10 minutes before it opens. Staff and friendly and polite too.
Fish and Chips second to none. However, choosing to close all weekend, Sat, Sun, Mon, when the town has most visitors is puzzling. The shop has a fabulous reputation for the best Fish & Chips for miles around so visitors must be bitterly disappointed to find it closed at peak times when they get here. Towns like Buckfastleigh need their shops to be open if not just for the locals but for visitors. Understandable that staff need a break but surely Sunday and Monday should suffice, closing on a Saturday when you are running a business, crazy!
If you’re not eating at Jolly Rogers once a week, are you even living?! My husband and I are regulars—nay, loyal shipmates—aboard this fine vessel of battered brilliance. The fish? So fresh I swear it winked at me. The batter? Crispier than a gossip column in a hair salon. And the chips? Golden treasure worthy of a pirate’s chest. Honestly, I’d walk the plank for a portion of their mushy peas. Service is faster than a seagull spotting an unattended chip, and friendlier than your Nan after two sherries. They’ve ruined all other fish and chip shops for us—and we couldn’t be happier about it. Long may they fry
Fantastic fish and chips and lunch menu. Really quick, efficient, friendly service. We eat here very regularly and never had a bad experience. Absolutely loving it! Thank you Kelly and John x
We turned up with a group of 15. No complaints - they cooked excellent food for us quickly and to a high standard. They also let us use an indoor space to eat. Great service, great food and very freindly.
Just as good as it's always been, have known this shop since 2017 and it has always been first rate, as good as it gets and consistently so too. Delicous proper British fish and chips every time, a real treat indeed.
Definitely try the Hake and chips for a fantastic £8.60. The standard cod also impresses. Don't overlook the cheesy chips; they add a flavorful twist!
Yes, there's a great children's menu. Options include Mini Fish & Chips, Sausage & Chips, and Chicken Nuggets & Chips, perfect for little ones.
